Wheat Harvest in Russia: Mid-Season Update 2024

As of July 26, wheat yields in Russia are showing a decline compared to last year. Last year, the average yield was 40.4 centners per hectare, but this year it has dropped to 35.2 centners per hectare. Despite this, the pace of harvesting is significantly higher than last year: on the same date last year, only 6.7 million hectares were harvested, while this year, 13.9 million hectares have been harvested, accounting for 46.4% of the total harvesting area. As a result, 48.9 million tons of wheat have been collected so far.

The analytical center “SovEcon” estimates that this year’s wheat harvest in Russia will reach 84.7 million tons. It is noted that, despite unfavorable weather conditions for farmers across most of the European territory of Russia, conditions in the Urals and Siberia have been better, which could lead to higher-than-average yields in these regions.

Harvesting work has not yet begun in the Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Omsk regions, and the Altai Territory.

It is worth noting that in recent years, the average wheat yield in Kazakhstan has been only 12-13 centners per hectare, which is three times lower than in Russia. However, this year, due to spring and summer rains, the country is expected to have a record harvest.
