Analysis of changes in Kazakhstan wheat export shipments by destination: February 2024
Export shipments of wheat from Kazakhstan have undergone significant fluctuations in recent years. A detailed examination of data for February 2023 and 2024, as well as analysis for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons, revealed the main trends and changes in export destinations.
In February 2024, a 4.5% year-on-year decrease in exports to Uzbekistan was noted, and since the beginning of the current season, total shipments have decreased by 6%. A notable reduction in purchases was recorded in Turkmenistan - by 91.4% in February, although the total volume of wheat shipped has increased since the beginning of the season (354,000 tons vs. 247,000 tons last season). Exports to Afghanistan decreased by 78% in February and by 73% for the whole season.
Tajikistan, in contrast, increased imports of Kazakh wheat by 15.5% in February 2024 compared to the same period last year, although total exports have declined by 8% since the beginning of the season. Azerbaijan has not recorded any shipments of Kazakh wheat since November 2023, indicating a 97% decrease in exports this season compared to the previous season.
At the same time, through the Baltic ports there was a significant increase in export volumes - by 274%, which may be due to the expansion of logistics routes.
Also worth noting is the increase in exports to China in February to 47.5 thousand tons, which stands out against the background of a general decline in wheat export volumes in most directions. In particular, a significant decrease in export volumes may be caused by low crop quality and a large amount of sprouted grain.
