84.5 Tonnes of Contaminated Products Denied Entry into Kazakhstan
A quarantine pest was detected in batches of safflower seeds, flax seeds and barley during phytosanitary inspections at the Taskala and Shagan checkpoints
In the West Kazakhstan Region, state plant quarantine inspectors of the Committee for State Inspection in the Agro-Industrial Complex under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan prevented 84.5 tonnes of regulated products from entering the country.
Laboratory tests detected a dangerous quarantine pest — Russian knapweed — in the product batches.
The violations were identified during phytosanitary inspections at the Taskala and Shagan checkpoints.
At the Taskala phytosanitary control checkpoint, specialists inspected batches of food-grade safflower seeds and barley. During the inspection, samples were collected and sent for phytosanitary examination.
At the Shagan checkpoint, a batch of food-grade flax seeds was inspected. Samples were also collected and sent for laboratory testing.
The examination was conducted by the West Kazakhstan Regional Quarantine Laboratory, a branch of the state enterprise Phytosanitary.
According to the laboratory findings, seeds of Russian knapweed (Acroptilon repens L.) were detected in all samples examined. This species is classified as a quarantine pest.
In accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the contaminated product batches were denied entry into the country.
All 84.5 tonnes of regulated products were returned to the exporting country.
The Ministry of Agriculture continues its efforts to ensure phytosanitary safety and prevent the import into Kazakhstan of regulated products that may pose a threat to agricultural production.
