Wheat Prices at Russia's Baltic Ports Rise Amid Declining Exports
Russian Wheat Shipments Could Fall to 1.8–2.3 Million Tonnes in September
Export prices for Russian wheat at Baltic ports rose noticeably over the past week. The increase came amid a sharp decline in shipments linked to restrictions in the Azov-Black Sea basin, Reuters reports.
According to the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR), the price of wheat with 12.5% protein content in the Baltic region reached $263 per tonne FOB Vysotsk by the end of last week. A week earlier, wheat for delivery on the same basis was valued at $248 per tonne.
Currently, the bulk of export shipments is being redirected to the Baltic region, as southern markets remain virtually closed.
IKAR Director General Dmitry Rylko said the nominal price of wheat with 12.5% protein content for delivery FOB from Novorossiysk is currently estimated at $210 per tonne.
Against this backdrop, analysts at SovEcon presented their first estimate for Russian wheat exports in September. According to their forecast, shipments will total 1.8–2.3 million tonnes. For comparison, Russia exported 4.8 million tonnes of wheat a year earlier.
SovEcon head Andrey Sizov noted that September could become the second consecutive month with the lowest export level since 2010. At the same time, shipments are expected to decline by more than 50% compared with the previous year.
