No Exceptions: Ban on Import of Russian Wheat for Kazakh Millers and Poultry Farmers
The government of Kazakhstan has decided to extend and tighten the existing ban on wheat imports, which came into effect in April this year and initially allowed shipments only for milling and poultry enterprises. The Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan has announced that the new measures will not have any exceptions and will apply to all types of transport, except for transit through the country's territory.
According to statistical data, in the first half of 2024, wheat imports from Russia reached 1.1 million tons, which is 10% higher than the figures for the same period last year. As of July 1, Kazakhstan had 6.1 million tons of grain reserves, including 5.1 million tons of wheat, of which 4 million tons were intended for food purposes. Additionally, favorable weather conditions are expected to yield a good harvest this year.
According to Ministry representatives, these measures are aimed at supporting domestic agricultural producers and increasing the country's self-sufficiency in the context of significant stocks of last year's wheat.
