Feed shipments from Kazakhstan to China through the Dostyk station have tripled

Surging feed shipments through Dostyk strengthen Kazakhstan–China rail flows

Rail freight flows between Kazakhstan and China continue to grow steadily, with agricultural products becoming a key driver of this increase.

The national railway operator, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), reported a rise in freight volumes passing through the “Dostyk — Alashankou” border crossing over the first eleven months of 2025. According to newly released data, shipments of feed products through this route have increased threefold compared to last year. The total volume transported reached an impressive 522.4 thousand tons.

Positive momentum is evident not only in the feed segment but also in overall freight turnover. Between January and November 2025, the Dostyk — Alashankou crossing handled:

  • 450.2 thousand railcars (+1% year-on-year);

  • A total of 17.8 million tons of cargo (+6% compared to 2024).

The statistics indicate growing activity on both sides of the border, with increases seen in cargo handed over to China as well as in shipments received from China:

Exports to China (handover):
209.7 thousand railcars were dispatched, carrying a total of 12.9 million tons, which is 4% higher than last year’s result.

Imports from China (receipt):
241 thousand railcars were received. Incoming cargo volumes rose sharply by 12%, reaching 4.8 million tons.

Export transportation overall also strengthened: over 11 months, 138.9 thousand railcars were sent abroad (+6%), while total export tonnage increased by 10%, amounting to 9.2 million tons.
