Container transportation volumes continue to grow in Kazakhstan

Growth is driven by rising export, import and transit traffic, as well as the development of the country’s modern logistics infrastructure

Kazakhstan continues to demonstrate growth in container transportation volumes. According to the Ministry of Transport, by the end of 2025, the volume of cargo transported in containers reached 2.203 million TEU, compared to 2.115 million TEU in 2024. During this period, the containerization rate increased from 6.7% to 8%.

The positive trend has continued this year. In January–April 2026, container transportation volume amounted to 742 thousand TEU, while in the same period of 2025 the figure stood at 709 thousand TEU. The containerization rate increased from 8.2% to 8.5%.

The Ministry of Transport noted that the growth was driven by an increase in export, import and especially transit container transportation. The ministry believes this confirms the development of modern logistics solutions and the strengthening of the country’s transit potential.

It was also reported that, as part of implementing the President’s Address of September 8, 2025, a policy document aimed at developing container and multimodal transportation is planned to be adopted.

The document will include measures to develop terminal infrastructure, expand digital services, simplify customs and technological procedures, and create a unified system for managing container operations.

The implementation of these initiatives is expected to increase the level of cargo containerization, improve the efficiency of the logistics sector, and strengthen Kazakhstan’s position as a key transport and logistics hub in the region.
