Unknown Disease or Rains: What Caused the Livestock Deaths in WK
The Territorial Department of the Veterinary Control and Supervision Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan is conducting an investigation following social media reports of widespread illness and deaths among domestic livestock. Preliminary data suggest that an infectious disease might have caused the incident, although locals believe that the weakening of the livestock was due to prolonged rains.
On July 24, from 6:00 AM, heavy rain fell in the village of Kaztalov, after which the shepherd could not return the sheep from the agricultural garden back to the village and left them to winter in Myshym of Kaztalov rural district. On the night of July 25, 38 sheep and goats died. Veterinary service staff disposed of the animal bodies, and pathological materials from two sheep and one goat were sent to the regional veterinary laboratory for analysis to check for particularly dangerous diseases.
The results of the studies are expected on August 5. The veterinary service is closely monitoring the epizootic situation in this territory.
