Russia increased grain harvest by nearly 15 million tonnes in 2025

Wheat and oilseeds drive growth in Russia’s agricultural output

Russia’s agro-industrial complex ended 2025 with a significant increase in production indicators across key segments. According to preliminary data from Rosstat, the gross harvest of grain and leguminous crops in net weight amounted to 139.4 million tonnes, which is 10.7% higher than in 2024 (125.9 million tonnes). The main drivers of growth were wheat and oilseed crops.

The positive dynamics were primarily supported by higher yields of early grain crops. Wheat, Russia’s main export crop, demonstrated strong growth. Farmers across all categories of farms harvested 91.4 million tonnes, compared with 82.6 million tonnes a year earlier.

The positive trend was also supported by feed crops:

– Barley: production increased by 3 million tonnes to 19.7 million tonnes (16.7 million tonnes in 2024).

– Oats: output rose to 3.8 million tonnes, up by 0.77 million tonnes year-on-year.

The oilseed sector showed impressive dynamics, confirming producers’ interest in high-margin crops. While the traditional leader, sunflower, posted a stable result with a slight increase (17.008 million tonnes versus 16.909 million tonnes in 2024), alternative oilseeds reached new levels:

  1. Soybeans: production surged sharply from 7.056 million tonnes to 8.956 million tonnes.

  2. Rapeseed: gross output increased from 4.7 million tonnes to 5.6 million tonnes.

Despite overall growth, several segments recorded a decline in production volumes, which may affect domestic market conditions in the current season.

Declines were recorded in the following categories:

– Grain corn: harvest decreased to 12.7 million tonnes (13.9 million tonnes in 2024).
– Sugar beet: output totaled 43.6 million tonnes, down from 45.1 million tonnes a year earlier.
– Rice: production remained largely stable with a slight decrease to 1.194 million tonnes.

The most notable decline occurred in the groats segment. Buckwheat production fell below the one-million-tonne mark to 923 thousand tonnes, compared with 1.2 million tonnes in the previous year. A similar trend was observed for rye, whose harvest decreased from 1.2 million tonnes to 998.8 thousand tonnes.

The data are presented by Rosstat as preliminary and include figures from agricultural organizations and farms measured in post-processing weight.
