Rail freight transportation between China and Europe is showing steady growth

The increase is driven by the expansion of trade ties and optimization of train schedules in line with market demand

In January–February 2026, 3,501 freight trains were dispatched along the China–Europe route, with total transport volume reaching 352 thousand TEU. Compared to the same period last year, the number of trains increased by 32%, while transport volumes grew by 25%. This was reported by the Association of Kazakhstan Freight Rail Carriers.

In particular, during the reporting period, 1,498 trains were handled at the Alashankou border crossing in the direction of Europe and Central Asia, which is 24.1% higher year-on-year. The growth is attributed to expanding trade ties as well as adjustments to train schedules in response to current market demand.

The China–Europe rail network includes 128 cities in China and 229 destinations in Europe, as well as more than 100 cities across Asia. Trains across the entire network depart on average every 30 minutes or more frequently.
