IGC forecasts global pulse trade growth to 22.3 million tons

International analysts expect higher shipments of peas and lentils

Global trade in pulse crops may increase by 5% in 2026. This forecast is contained in the May report of the International Grains Council (IGC), according to which global pulse trade in 2026 is estimated at 22.3 million tons.

According to analysts, the main driver of growth will be increased demand from India, China, Bangladesh and the countries of the European Union.

Experts also expect a significant increase in pea trade. By the end of the current year, global trade in peas could reach 5.9 million tons, which is 18% higher than last year’s level. The market is being supported by growing demand from China and stable purchases by India.

In addition, global lentil trade is also expected to rise. According to IGC estimates, shipments of lentils will increase by 9% to 4.9 million tons.

At the same time, analysts do not rule out a decline in global chickpea trade. The reason cited is weaker demand from South Asian countries. By the end of the year, global chickpea trade is projected at 3.4 million tons.
