Contrasting August: Kazhydromet Forecasts Drought in the South and Rain in the North of Kazakhstan
Climate Contrast: Drought in the South, Rainfall in the North
August 2025 is expected to bring highly diverse weather conditions to Kazakhstan. While the northern regions will receive moderate amounts of moisture, much of the west, south, and east of the country will face moderate drought. This is the preliminary forecast published by RSE "Kazhydromet".
The national hydrometeorological service has released its analysis of expected weather patterns for the final month of summer. According to calculations based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the weather picture across the country will vary significantly.
Experts attribute the growing drought in several regions to the dominance of stable anticyclonic systems. These extensive zones of high atmospheric pressure suppress cloud formation, leading to prolonged periods of clear skies and lack of rainfall. This has directly contributed to moisture deficits in certain areas.
This forecast holds particular importance for the agricultural sector. In the southern regions of Kazakhstan, where dry summers are the climatic norm, crop yields depend heavily on the availability and timely supply of irrigation water. The lack of natural precipitation increases pressure on irrigation infrastructure and overall water resources.
Forecasters also provided detailed precipitation projections for August. Across most of the country, rainfall is expected to remain within climatic norms.
Regions where precipitation is expected to exceed normal levels:
• Pavlodar Region
• Most parts of North Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan, and Abay Regions
• Northern districts of Kostanay Region
• Northeastern part of Akmola Region
• Northeasternmost part of Karaganda Region
Regions expected to experience precipitation deficits:
• Atyrau Region
• Southern areas of West Kazakhstan Region
• Southwestern part of Aktobe Region
• Northern part of Mangystau Region
Thus, the coming August presents varying challenges for Kazakhstan’s agricultural producers. While favorable conditions may prevail in the north, farmers in the west and south will need to plan irrigation use carefully to mitigate the impact of drought. This preliminary forecast serves as a key guide for local authorities and farmers in preparing for the weather conditions of late summer.
