Second Wind for Aport: New Apple Orchards to Cover 110 Hectares in Southern Kazakhstan

25,000 Aport saplings to be planted in Almaty region by 2028 — the large-scale project is already underway

In 2025, a large-scale project to revive one of Kazakhstan’s most iconic apple varieties — Aport — will begin in the Almaty region. According to the approved Roadmap, 25,000 saplings will be planted over the next three years (by 2028) across 110 hectares. Funding for the initiative has already been secured, and specialists from LLP "KazRIF of Fruit and Vegetable Growing" have started implementing the project.

The National Agrarian Science and Education Center (NASEC) notes that the establishment of new orchards is a major milestone for the domestic horticulture sector. The center believes the revival of this variety will not only strengthen Kazakhstan’s position in the fruit and vegetable market but also provide the population with high-quality, delicious, and eco-friendly produce.

The first harvest from the new orchards is expected in no less than eight years. However, scientists emphasize that with proper modern agricultural technologies, young trees can yield up to 57.7 kilograms of fruit in the early stages of fruiting. At maturity, a single tree's yield can reach 100 kilograms.

Aport apples are renowned not only for their rich flavor and large size but also for their excellent shelf life. Under proper storage conditions, they retain their quality until March, and with modern preservation technologies — up to June, making them attractive for logistics and export.

Experts believe the successful revival of Aport could become a catalyst for the development of farming enterprises in the region, attract investment into the agricultural sector, and increase Kazakhstan’s horticultural export potential.
