Grain Balance of Kazakhstan: Wheat Stocks Increase by December 2025, While Feed Grain Volumes Decline
Wheat stock growth offsets decline in feed grain reserves
According to updated national statistics, Kazakhstan entered the winter season with increased grain reserves. As of December 1, 2025, total stocks of grains and pulses (including rice) in the country reached 22.13 million tonnes. For comparison, this figure stood at 21.2 million tonnes a year earlier.
The main driver of growth was wheat, which has demonstrated positive dynamics for the third consecutive year, while stock levels for other crops have adjusted downward.
Situation in the Wheat Market
As of the reporting date, wheat stocks in the country are estimated at approximately 17.9 million tonnes. An analysis of retrospective data indicates a stable accumulation trend:
as of December 1, 2024, wheat stocks amounted to 17.15 million tonnes;
on the same date in 2023, they totaled only 12.3 million tonnes.
Qualitative structure of wheat stocks as of December 1, 2025:
Food-grade wheat accounts for the dominant share — around 16 million tonnes.
Seed wheat stocks amount to 1 million tonnes.
Feed wheat reserves are estimated at 910 thousand tonnes.
Durum wheat stocks deserve special mention. Their total volume stands at 981.2 thousand tonnes, with the vast majority — 881.4 thousand tonnes — classified as food-grade wheat.
Dynamics of Other Crops
In contrast to the wheat segment, stocks of other key agricultural crops have declined compared to the previous season.
Barley. Stock levels decreased year-on-year. As of December 1, 2025, available volumes amounted to 2.49 million tonnes (2.58 million tonnes a year earlier).
Corn. Stocks fell to 269 thousand tonnes, down from 302 thousand tonnes in 2024.
Oats. Current inventories are estimated at 247 thousand tonnes, below last year’s level of 291 thousand tonnes.
Buckwheat. Stocks of this groat crop also declined, reaching 96 thousand tonnes (106 thousand tonnes as of December 1, 2024).
Thus, the overall increase in Kazakhstan’s grain balance in the current season has been driven primarily by the wheat group, which compensated for the decline in feed and groat crop stocks.
