Kazakhstan Intends to Enter the Global Fertilizer Market
Potash fertilizer production capacity is planned to increase to 12 million tonnes by 2035
In the coming years, Kazakhstan could fully meet its domestic demand for the main types of mineral fertilizers and begin supplying these products to foreign markets. Kazinform reported this, citing a publication by The World Financial Review.
According to the publication, Kazakhstan is implementing projects to establish next-generation enterprises with a total value of several billion US dollars. The launch of new production facilities is expected to significantly increase the output of potash, nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers.
One of the major projects will be the production of potash fertilizers by Qazaq Kalium Ltd. The first stage of the enterprise, with a capacity of 1 million tonnes, is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.
The company subsequently intends to gradually increase production volumes. By 2035, annual production capacity is expected to reach 12 million tonnes of potash fertilizers.
At the same time, Kazakhstan's domestic demand for this type of fertilizer is around 100,000 tonnes. Given the planned production volumes, Kazakhstan is expected to become a major exporter of potash fertilizers on the global market.
Expansion of the production base is also planned in the urea segment. Domestic demand for this product is expected to be met following the launch of three major complexes in 2029–2030.
In particular, the KMG PetroChem project provides for the production of 800,000 tonnes of urea. The capacity of the Qazesta Fertilizers Ltd. facility is expected to reach 700,000 tonnes.
Another project, KazAzot PRIME, is designed to produce 577,000 tonnes of urea and 500,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate.
At the same time, Kazakhstan plans to increase the production of phosphate fertilizers. Kazphosphate, together with SINOPEC and CNCEC, intends to expand the relevant production capacity to 5 million tonnes.
The first 1 million tonnes of ammophos under these plans is expected to be produced in 2029.
Thus, the implementation of the announced projects is expected to enable Kazakhstan to fully meet domestic demand for the main types of mineral fertilizers by 2030 and begin supplying these products to export markets.
