☘️ NANOC Enhances Cotton Breeding: New High-Yield Varieties
🔹 Kazakh scientists are developing new cotton varieties capable of adapting to the diverse climatic conditions of the country.
🔹 These new varieties demonstrate high yields (up to 50 c/ha) and fiber quality with a length of 33-34 mm.
🔹 The cotton harvest has already begun, with initial results showing excellent performance in Indian hybrid samples.
In Kazakhstan, work has begun on breeding new competitive cotton varieties, initiated by NANOC with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture. The main goal of the project is to develop varieties capable of ensuring stable production in various soil and climatic conditions of the country.
From April 24 to 25, samples and hybrid combinations for further crossbreeding were planted in selection nurseries. The project includes 33 station samples, 26 hybrid combinations, and 420 samples from the biological nursery. It is planned to obtain 40 tons of elite seeds of the M-4011 and M-5027 varieties.
Scientists note that the developed medium-staple cotton varieties demonstrate high yields—45 to 50 centners per hectare—as well as early maturity, allowing the crop to be harvested 110-117 days after sowing. The fiber quality is also impressive: the yield is 38-40%, and the fiber length is 33-34 mm. Selection of the best samples for further breeding work has already begun.
It is expected that the new variety will be submitted to the State Commission for Agricultural Testing and Varieties of Kazakhstan. Throughout the growing season, comprehensive care was provided for the plants, including fertilization, inter-row processing, pest control, and irrigation.
The cotton harvest began in early September, and NANOC employees report high yields from Indian hybrid samples, which have shown excellent results.
This project represents a significant step towards the development of the cotton industry in Kazakhstan, enabling the country to compete in the global market and ensure sustainable production in the future.
