The China–Central Asia Transport Corridor Undergoes Modernization in Kazakhstan

In 2025, modernization will begin on the 293 km Altynkol – Zhetygen section: second tracks, passing loops, station upgrades

Large-scale infrastructure projects continue in the Almaty region, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of railway logistics and strengthening Kazakhstan’s transport potential.

According to the press service of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), in 2025 the company plans to begin modernization of the Altynkol – Zhetygen railway section, stretching 293 km.
The project includes the construction of second tracks, installation of new passing loops, and development of station infrastructure. These measures are expected to significantly increase the throughput capacity of the line, unlocking new logistical opportunities within the international transport corridor between China and Central Asia. The initiative is also seen as an important driver of socio-economic development for southeastern regions of Kazakhstan.

Simultaneously, construction of a bypass railway line around Almaty is underway. The earthwork for the new tracks is already completed, with 74 km of rail-track structures assembled. Bridge construction and pipe installations are progressing according to schedule. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Another significant development is in the field of multimodal logistics. A cooperation agreement was recently signed between KTZ’s subsidiary, Kedentransservice, and China’s major transport-investment group, Jinghua. The partnership will focus on building a modern transport and logistics complex in Almaty, which will complement the expanding infrastructure and enhance Kazakhstan’s export and transit capacity.

It is expected that the successful implementation of these projects will not only strengthen Kazakhstan’s position on the Eurasian transport market but also provide the country’s agricultural sector with more stable access to international sales channels.
