Kazakhstan Introduces Intelligent Plant Protection System for the First Time

The new technology enables real-time monitoring of pest emergence and forecasting of phytosanitary risks

For the first time in Kazakhstan, a plant protection system based on intelligent pheromone traps and digital forecasting technologies has been launched. The pilot project is being implemented in the Almaty Region at the apple orchard of the Dikhan farm as part of an R&D commercialization project of the Kazakh Research Institute of Plant Protection and Quarantine named after Zh. Zhiembayev, in cooperation with Chinese partners.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the technology is considered a universal solution and may eventually be applied not only in horticulture but also in the cultivation of other agricultural crops, including field and industrial crops. This creates the foundation for establishing a large-scale digital phytosanitary monitoring system within the country’s agro-industrial sector. If the pilot project proves successful, the system may be expanded to farms across Kazakhstan.

The new system not only detects pest emergence in real time but also provides a basis for phytosanitary forecasting. Data collected by the intelligent traps is automatically transmitted online, allowing specialists to monitor changes in pest populations and forecast future developments using digital models.

This approach enables a transition from reacting to existing threats to proactive management of phytosanitary risks. As a result, it becomes possible to determine more accurately the timing and necessity of plant protection measures.

The use of digital monitoring improves forecast accuracy, reduces the risk of crop losses, and enables more efficient application of plant protection products.
