Khorgos Sets New Freight Record

2,375 trains passed through Khorgos in three months

The Khorgos border station on the Kazakhstan-China border completed the first quarter of 2025 with a historic record: 2,375 trains transported 3.336 million tonnes of various cargo. Compared to the same period last year, the number of trains increased by 28.5%, and total tonnage grew by 26%.

According to the Association of Kazakh Railway Freight Carriers, such significant growth was made possible thanks to comprehensive measures to optimize border processing. Additionally, due to the expansion of transport geography, the total number of trains dispatched from China to Central Asia rose by 25.5% to 3,582.

Today, Khorgos services 87 regular routes, connecting 18 countries and 46 cities across Eurasia.

Practical Implications for the Agricultural Sector:
Lower delivery costs. Increased throughput capacity shortens travel time and reduces idle risks, which is especially important for oilseeds and flour.
Sales flexibility. Fast logistics allow exporters to respond quickly to market price fluctuations in Central Asia and the Middle East.
Seasonal stability. During peak harvest shipment times, reducing bottlenecks at the border helps avoid price discounts caused by delays.

If this momentum continues, 2025 could become a breakthrough year for Kazakhstan’s transit statistics. Market experts believe that each additional train through Khorgos gives agricultural exporters the opportunity to strengthen their presence in new markets and increase competitiveness thanks to a more predictable delivery schedule.
