Southern Regions: Kazhydromet Issues Forecast for Winter Wheat Yield

Kazhydromet forecasts stable winter wheat yields in southern Kazakhstan

Based on agrometeorological observations and the weather forecast for the upcoming season, experts at Kazhydromet expect that winter wheat yields in the southern regions of Kazakhstan will generally remain at long-term average levels. According to the agency, the yield range across most areas in the Almaty, Zhambyl, Turkistan regions and the Zhetysu Region is estimated between 14 and 26 centners per hectare.

In the Almaty Region, Kazhydromet forecasts yields ranging from 14.4 to 25.9 c/ha; in the Zhambyl Region — from 14.4 to 19.8 c/ha; and in the primary growing areas of the Turkistan Region — from 14.3 to 33.1 c/ha. Similar average values are expected in the Zhetysu Region, where yields are projected between 14.8 and 23.9 c/ha.

However, local climate conditions have weakened the outlook for Karatal District in Zhetysu. Due to a shortage of rainfall during the critical phases of stem elongation and heading, yields there are expected to be slightly below normal, ranging from 12.1 to 14.1 c/ha.

Meanwhile, several areas in the Turkistan Region may exceed average figures. According to Kazhydromet's calculations, higher-than-average yields — between 15.4 and 17.4 c/ha — are possible in the Arys and Saryagash districts. Even stronger results are forecasted in the Kazygurt and Ordabasy districts — 24.8–26.8 c/ha and 22.8–24.8 c/ha, respectively.

Overall, the situation across the southern regions remains stable. Except for some localized zones, most farms can expect yields within long-term average parameters.
