60 Thousand Tons on the Way: Kazakhstan Expands Grain Exports to Morocco

Kazakhstan has sent the first grain shipment via a new route through Latvia — 105 wagons are now on their way to North Africa

Kazakhstan continues to strengthen its grain exports to North Africa. A first shipment of grain via a new route to Morocco — through Latvia — has been dispatched from the railway stations of Zhana-Yesil (Akmola Region) and Sarykol (Kostanay Region), according to the press service of the national railway company “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy.”

A train consisting of 105 grain wagons is en route to the port of Liepaja, where the cargo will be transferred to sea vessels and delivered to the North African coast. Within this logistics framework, a total of 17 full trainloads are planned, with an overall volume of approximately 60 thousand tons of grain grown in northern Kazakhstan.

Grain shipments to Morocco represent a new export destination for Kazakhstan’s agricultural sector. In the current marketing year (2024/25), the republic began systematic wheat exports to Morocco for the first time. According to official data, 83.5 thousand tons of grain were delivered to Morocco from January to March, with the highest monthly volume — 37.2 thousand tons — shipped in March.

Morocco has already entered the TOP-8 importers of Kazakh grain. Projections suggest that by the end of the season, exports may exceed 300 thousand tons, including shipments to other North African countries. Earlier, Kazakhstan’s Food Corporation reported preliminary agreements on grain deliveries to Morocco.

Despite Morocco’s decision to more than halve its wheat import subsidies, Kazakh grain remains competitive due to its favorable balance of quality and price.

The launch of this route via Latvia is part of Kazakhstan’s strategy to diversify export geography and logistics corridors. This move opens up new opportunities to increase the presence of Kazakh wheat in African markets and highlights the growing export potential of the domestic agro-industrial complex.
