IGC forecasts a decline in global lentil production in the 2026/27 marketing year
Despite lower production, global lentil consumption and trade are expected to continue growing on the back of strong demand
Global lentil production is projected to decline to 9.4 million tonnes in the 2026/27 marketing year, down from 10.6 million tonnes in the previous season. The forecast was published in the June report of the International Grains Council (IGC), according to the Russian Federal Center "Agroexport."
According to IGC analysts, after a significant increase in the previous season, lentil production is expected to decrease due to reduced planting areas and lower yields.
Despite the anticipated decline in production, global demand for lentils is expected to continue growing, supported by substantial carryover stocks. IGC forecasts global lentil consumption to reach 8.7 million tonnes in the 2026/27 marketing year, compared with 8.5 million tonnes in 2025/26 and 7.3 million tonnes in the 2024/25 season.
Global lentil trade is also expected to maintain positive momentum. In 2026, trade volumes are projected to increase to 5 million tonnes, representing a 9% rise compared with the previous year.
According to IGC, global lentil trade is expected to remain at roughly the same level in 2027 as in 2026. Demand from Asian countries will continue to be the key factor shaping the market.
