Kazakhstan strengthens its position in sunflower oil exports and expands oilseed processing

The industry is transitioning to deep processing and reinforcing its presence in foreign markets

More than 90% of oilseeds produced in Kazakhstan are processed domestically. This was reported by the Ministry of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which noted the sector’s steady transition from a raw-material model to deep processing.

In recent years, the oil and fat industry has significantly strengthened its position in the global market. According to the results of the 2024/25 marketing year, exports of vegetable oils and meal exceeded 1.3 million tons, with a total value of $837 million. According to the National Association of Oilseed Processors, by the end of 2025 Kazakhstan will move up two positions and rank sixth in the world in sunflower oil exports. The country is also among the top three suppliers of sunflower meal to European Union countries.

The ministry emphasized that more than 90% of oilseeds grown in the country are currently processed within Kazakhstan. This reflects structural changes in the industry and an increase in value-added production.

Overall agricultural exports are also showing positive dynamics. According to QazTrade, in 2025 exports of agricultural products increased by 37.8% to reach $7.13 billion. The oil and fat sector made a significant contribution to this growth.

Speaking at a round table in Almaty, Chairman of the National Association of Oilseed Processors Yadykar Ibragimov noted that modernization of enterprises, expansion of production capacities, and development of logistics infrastructure have enabled Kazakhstan to secure a place among the leading exporters of sunflower oil. He stated that the industry’s strategic goal is to enter the top three global exporters and increase foreign currency revenue to $2 billion.

Since 2021, oilseed processing capacities in Kazakhstan have grown by more than 2.5 times and continue to expand. The main export destinations remain China, Central Asian countries, and the European Union. Combined imports of vegetable oils and meal in these markets exceed 40 million tons annually.
