KREM Rejects KTZ Application for Early Increase in Railway Tariffs
The proposal to raise rates by nearly 80% did not receive the regulator’s approval
The application for an early increase in railway transportation tariffs in Kazakhstan has been rejected. Over the next two years, the cost of services will remain at the current level. This was reported on February 23 by the Association of Kazakhstan Railway Carriers.
According to the association, the regulator declined to accept for consideration the documents submitted by the national company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, despite the justifications provided. The carrier cited rising debt servicing costs and the need to implement a large-scale investment program.
The decision was made by the Committee for Regulation of Natural Monopolies. As a result, the current tariffs will remain unchanged in the medium term.
Earlier, the national company had announced its intention to increase rates by nearly 80%, citing a high debt burden and plans to modernize infrastructure. In particular, starting from April 1, 2026, a twofold increase in tariffs for main railway network services for grain transportation had been proposed.
