Transit Through Turkish Straits to Become More Expensive from July 1
The Tariff Changes Will Affect Vessels Passing Through the Bosporus and Dardanelles Without Entering Ports
Türkiye Today reports that Turkey will increase transit fees for vessels passing through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits starting July 1. A new gold franc value of USD 6.7 will be used to calculate the charges.
The new rate is nearly 15% higher than the current value of USD 5.83, which was established in 2022.
Under the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, vessels transiting through the Turkish straits without calling at ports are charged for mandatory services such as sanitary inspections, lighthouse services, and search and rescue assistance. The fees are calculated based on a vessel’s net registered tonnage (NRT) and are denominated in gold francs, a historical accounting unit established under the 1936 convention.
The gold franc, equivalent to approximately 0.290322 grams of pure gold, serves as the benchmark for calculating transit charges. Its value in U.S. dollars is periodically revised by the Turkish authorities.
According to calculations published by the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, a vessel with a net tonnage of 10,000 tons will pay approximately USD 25,000 in total transit fees after the new rates come into effect on July 1.
