Iran Imported Over 90% of Required Wheat in the 2025/26 Season
The main grain deliveries have largely been completed, with Russia remaining the key supplier
In the current marketing year (2025/26 MY), Iran has already purchased the majority of the wheat it needs — more than 90%. This was reported by analysts from the analytical center of Rusagrotrans JSC, according to Interfax.
According to experts, from July 2025 to February 2026, about 1.9 million tons of wheat were delivered to the country, while the total expected import volume is estimated at 2–2.2 million tons. Almost the entire volume was supplied by Russia, whose share in the import structure is close to 100%.
Analysts also expect Iran’s barley imports in the 2025/26 marketing year to reach approximately 2.9 million tons. Russia has already shipped around 2 million tons to Iran out of its export potential of 2.2 million tons. In addition to Russia, Kazakhstan also supplies barley to the Iranian market, having already exported about 0.6 million tons out of a potential 0.7 million tons.
Experts also noted an increase in corn supplies from Russia. Active exports of this crop to Iran began in November 2025, and the volume has now reached 1.95 million tons out of a potential 2.2–2.3 million tons.
Brazil remains the largest supplier of corn to Iran. According to analysts, the country has already exported a record 8.3 million tons of grain to the Iranian market, compared to 5.3 million tons for the entire previous season.
Earlier, on March 4, Reuters reported a temporary suspension of Russian grain shipments to Iran via the Black and Caspian Seas due to airstrikes by Israel and the United States on the country’s territory. At the same time, Russian grain exports to other countries continue.
