Kazhydromet Assesses Winter Wheat Yield Prospects for 2026
Yield levels in most winter crop-growing regions are expected to remain within long-term average values
Kazhydromet has published its final forecast for winter wheat yields, prepared based on current agrometeorological conditions and the expected weather pattern for the upcoming period.
According to specialists’ calculations, winter wheat yields in the Almaty, Zhambyl, and Turkestan regions, as well as the Zhetysu Region, are generally expected to remain within long-term average levels, ranging from 10.5 to 22.8 centners per hectare.
In the Turkestan Region, yields are forecast to exceed long-term averages in the Kazygurt District, where productivity may reach 21.7–23.7 centners per hectare. In the remaining districts of the region, yields are expected to stay within normal levels.
Meteorologists note that during the first ten days of June, conditions for winter wheat grain filling in southern and southeastern Kazakhstan were generally favorable. Air temperatures exceeded the climatic norm by 2–5°C. In most winter crop-growing areas, precipitation remained below average, while some districts of the Zhetysu Region received above-normal rainfall.
In the Almaty Region, minimum air temperatures in winter wheat-growing areas ranged from +10 to +12°C. Precipitation totaled 5–9 mm, equivalent to 31–52% of the climatic norm. Winter grain crops are currently in the flowering to milk ripeness stages. Crop conditions are predominantly assessed as good to excellent, with plant heights ranging from 53 to 93 cm.
In the Zhetysu Region, winter grain crops are in stages ranging from flowering to wax ripeness. In the vicinity of the Shokan agrometeorological station in Kerbulak District, crops have reached the heading stage. Crop conditions are generally rated as good.
In the Zhambyl Region, minimum temperatures in winter wheat fields ranged between +8 and +16°C. Precipitation amounted to 1–4 mm, representing 18–78% of the norm. The condition of winter wheat crops is assessed mainly as good and excellent.
In the Turkestan Region, winter wheat and winter barley are also reported to be in good condition, creating favorable prerequisites for achieving yields within the projected range.
