Rail freight traffic between Kazakhstan and Russia increased by 3.5%

Positive cargo flow dynamics continue due to the development of transit routes and intergovernmental agreements

Rail freight transportation between Kazakhstan and Russia continues to grow. According to the results of 2025, the total cargo transportation volume between the two countries reached 92.1 million tons, which is 3.5% higher than the 2024 level.

According to KTZ press service, the main contribution to growth came from transit transportation. The export volume of Russian cargo through Kazakhstan increased by 16.1% and reached 17.3 million tons. In turn, the export of Kazakh cargo transit through Russia grew by 20.4%, reaching 21.5 million tons.

The national company noted that one of the key factors behind the increase in cargo flows was the Intergovernmental Agreement on railway transit transportation signed in Moscow in November 2025.

“The effectiveness of the adopted measures is confirmed by the results of the first four months of 2026. The export of Kazakh cargo, including coal, ferrous metals, and fertilizers, transit through Russia increased by 70 thousand tons and reached 7 million tons. The volume of Russian cargo moving to and through Kazakhstan, including petroleum products, ferrous metals, grain, and food cargo, exceeded 12 million tons, increasing by about 20%,” KTZ reported.
