Kazakhstan develops a long-term strategy for dairy livestock development

The program aims to increase productivity, modernize production, and attract investment

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), together with the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, held a seminar presenting the results of the TCP/KAZ/4001 project. The initiative aims to support the development of a long-term program for the development of dairy livestock farming in the country.

The project was implemented with FAO technical assistance and focuses on increasing competitiveness, productivity, and investment attractiveness of Kazakhstan’s dairy sector. It also aims to align the sector’s development with international best practices and national agricultural policy priorities.

During the seminar, participants were presented with the results of a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the dairy sector and its production and supply chain in Kazakhstan.

A draft long-term program for the development of dairy livestock farming was also presented, including a proposed action plan for its implementation and a roadmap for attracting investment to the sector.

Discussions focused on priority measures needed to ensure sustainable growth, modernization of production, and improved efficiency of the dairy sector. Participants exchanged views on strengthening the production and supply chain, increasing productivity, and creating favorable conditions for attracting investment into the dairy industry.

According to Kairat Koshenov, Deputy Director of the Livestock Department at the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, the development of a long-term program for the dairy sector is an important step toward strengthening the country’s food security and improving the competitiveness of domestic livestock farming. He noted that FAO’s technical support made it possible to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the sector and identify priority measures to stimulate sustainable growth, modernization, and investment attraction.

The seminar served as a platform for reviewing the proposed strategic documents, exchanging views, and confirming the relevance of the proposed measures. The outcomes of the discussions will contribute to further improvement of the program and support its effective implementation, ultimately strengthening the sustainability and long-term development of Kazakhstan’s dairy sector.
