Grain in supply, but quality is low: Wheat harvest concluding in EKR

Harvest in EKR concludes: why farmers are facing low grain quality

The harvest campaign is concluding in the East Kazakhstan region. Farms in the Glubokovsky, Katon-Karagay, Samar, and Ulan districts have already completed the wheat harvest. Sunflower harvesting continues on several farms.

Wheat yields in 2025 ranged from 12 to 50 centners per hectare. Maximum yields of up to 50 c/ha were recorded on individual farms in the Glubokovsky and Katon-Karagay districts. The average figures are 20–25 c/ha. In the Samar district, yields were 12–14 c/ha, and in the Ulan district, around 15 c/ha.

Weather conditions impacted the yield and quality of the grain. In the Samar district, hail fell twice during the growing and harvest season, followed by rain and snow. The grain in swaths began to sprout. Gluten levels decreased, and a significant portion of the grain is below Class 3.

Wheat prices range from 50,000 to 80,000 tenge per ton. However, according to farmers, this cost does not match the quality characteristics. Difficulties with logistics and storage were noted: farms without their own infrastructure are forced to deliver the grain immediately due to congested elevators and the need for rapid drying.

The formation of the 2026 sowing structure will depend on weather forecasts. A dry scenario anticipates an increase in areas for oilseed crops. If moisture is sufficient, a return to focusing on grains is possible. Overall, producers are focused on maintaining crop rotation.
